This Quick Start Card provides key points for accurately administering your new Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT). While the Quick Start Card is not a substitute for reading the EVT Manual, it can serve as a handy guide as you become familiar with this new test.
The EVT is not like other single-word expressive vocabulary tests that you may have used. It contains two types of items: labeling and synonym . For labeling items, you show a picture and ask, "What do you see?" The examinee gives a one-word response. For synonym items, you show a picture and say a word that describes the picture. The examinee's response must be a one-word synonym that also fits the picture.
Here are the rules for administering each item type and an explanation of the prompting and teaching symbols.
LABELING ITEMS. Items 1 - 38 are labeling items. You administer these items by reading from the easel. Examples 1 and 2 are unscored labeling examples that you must administer to every examinee before beginning testing to ensure that he or she understands how to do the task. Administer labeling items by following the directions printed on the easel for each item while pointing to the stimulus picture.
SYNONYM ITEMS. Items 39 - 190 are synonym items. You administer these items from the record form. Examples 3 and 4 are unscored synonym examples that you must administer to every examinee before beginning testing to ensure that he or she understands how to do the task. You must administer the examples, particularly to an examinee who has completed labeling items and is just beginning the synonym items.
Administer examples by following the directions on the easel pages. The directions include carrier phrases that you may use when administering the synonym items. Other suggested carrier phrases are found on pages 12 - 13 in the EVT Manual. Administer the synonym items by saying the stimulus word printed in bold on the record form while pointing to the stimulus picture in the easel.
For both labeling and synonym items, the most common correct responses are printed on the record form in blue below the stimulus word. Common incorrect responses are printed in orange. Additional correct and incorrect responses are on pages 21 - 32 in the EVT Manual.
PROMPTING. When
you see this symbol next to an incorrect item response on the record form,
prompt by saying: Tell me another word.
The examinee has another chance
to provide the correct response. Additional situations that require prompting
are listed on pages 13 - 14 in the EVT Manual.
TEACHING. When you see this symbol next to an item on the record form, you are to reinforce a correct response given, or model a correct response for an examinee who gave an incorrect response. This helps ensure that the examinee understands the task. Labeling items include teaching instructions with them.
For synonym items, teach by saying the following for a correct response:
That's right. [correct response] is another word for [stimulus word].
For
an incorrect response, say:
[correct response] is another word for [stimulus word].
Teach
ALL items marked with the symbol.
